CuRRENT EuRO 4
Euro 4 is the legislation name of the Regulation (EU) No. 168/2013, this covers new bikes sold across Europe from 2017 onwards or newly-designed bikes that first went on sale after 1 January 2016.
The most significant change is the limit on emissions, not only has the bike got to pass the emissions test now but also in the future after 20,000 km or 35,000 km depending on bike size then re-tested, so exhausts and catalytic converters are over engineered to pass these later tests, therefore you will see some very large obscure exhausts and cats on these latest machines.
For the manufactures to pass these strict emissions tests they had to run really lean the fuel maps in particular areas where tests are conducted, as you know lean running bikes are not healthy for your engine and your bike tends to run much hotter. So, these bikes really need new fuel maps straight out for the factory, so what’s happens if you fit a slip-on exhaust or install a new air filter? Well you get more air through the system and you make the bike even leaner – verging dangerous on engine components. The only fix is to correct the fuel maps with either a piggy back type controller like the Power Commander or an ECU flash preferably a custom map for your bike created with a dyno.
